About Verto

At Verto, we're on a mission to democratise global finance and empower businesses in Emerging Markets to reach the world. Founded by British-Nigerian entrepreneurs Ola Oyetayo and Anthony Oduu, our roots in Africa provided a firsthand understanding of the significant challenges businesses face with cross-border payments, from illiquid currencies and high fees to slow transactions. This deep-rooted insight is why Africa remains a core focus, as we're committed to bridging the gap between emerging and developed markets and fostering global economic growth.

What started as an FX solution for the Nigerian Naira has evolved into a market-leading platform, enabling thousands of businesses to seamlessly transfer billions of dollars annually. We believe that where you do business shouldn’t determine your success or ability to scale. We're creating equal access to the easy payment and liquidity solutions that are already a given in developed markets.

We're not alone in realising this crucial need; we're backed by world-class investors including Y-Combinator, Quona, and MEVP. Our impact has been recognised with accolades such as 'Fintech Start-Up of the Year' and the Milken-Motsepe Prize, a testament to our role in powering payments for some of the world's most disruptive startups. Join us as we continue to grow and transform global finance.

Role Overview

This role is crucial for strategically developing and enhancing Verto’s financial crime risk management, particularly for our complex "Downstream Payments" flows and emerging product lines. As a specialist, you will take ownership of key policy areas and act as a senior adviser to the MLRO to enhance our compliance framework, manage risks for enterprise clients, and optimize both internal processes and the external customer experience, playing a pivotal role in our Hong Kong and Downstream Compliance teams.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Compliance Manager to join our team in Hong Kong.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Providing dedicated Compliance support and subject matter expertise to the Hong Kong entity, contributing to the development of compliance policies and procedures.

  • Owning, refining, and managing the onboarding and Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) process for global Financial Institution (FI) and Non-Bank Financial Institution (NBFI) clients.

  • Assessing the effectiveness of prospective customers’ financial crime controls and evaluating their onboarding and transaction monitoring capabilities, making risk-based recommendations for client onboarding and ongoing monitoring strategies

  • Acting as a key point of contact for regulatory inquiries and preparing management information (MI) and reports for senior leadership on financial crime risks and control effectiveness.

  • Defining, implementing, and managing the Quality Assurance (QA) Framework for Downstream Payments.

  • Developing and delivering targeted financial crime training to first-line-of-defence teams to uplift capabilities and awareness.

  • Providing actionable insight on how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the onboarding and QA process through technology and automation.

What You Need

  • 3-5+ years of experience across Compliance, KYC/Onboarding, and Transaction Monitoring in a regulated firm (FI/NBFI).

  • Experience developing policy and reviewing complex Financial Institutions, including PSPs, MSBs, and cross-border payment firms.

  • Proficiency in Cantonese and Mandarin to support documentation review.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.

  • A university degree.

Best If You Have

  • Detailed knowledge of relevant international financial crime regulations across multiple jurisdictions.

  • An understanding of the nuances of Emerging Markets, with a particular focus on East Asia.

  • Experience collaborating with Compliance, TM, and Product teams to implement tailored monitoring scenarios.

  • Understand sync vs. async communication practices

  • Thrive in ambiguity and change

  • Actively seek feedback

  • Prioritise impact over activity
