AI & Automation Engineer at Ventures Platform
Ventures Platform is building a proprietary internal AI-powered product that will revolutionise how our teams operate across fund operations, platform & networks (portfolio success), people & culture (HR), investor relations, and investment decision-making. We’re hiring a AI & Automation Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and development of this internal platform from the ground up.
This is a unique opportunity for a product-minded full-stack engineer and AI expert to shape and ship a mission-critical internal platform at one of Africa’s leading VC firms. You'll have the rare chance to create a product that integrates cutting-edge AI models, productivity tools, databases, and automation frameworks into a seamless and intelligent experience for internal users.
Core Responsibilities
- AI Roadmap Development: Define the firm’s AI roadmap in collaboration with the team.
- Lead Full-Stack Product Development: Architect, design, and build internal AI-powered software that integrates across all key teams at VP—Fund Ops, Platform, HR, Investor Relations, and Investment.
- AI/ML Integration: Design intelligent AI workflows and pipelines by integrating existing foundation models (e.g., GPT, Claude, Mistral, open-source LLMs) to support internal knowledge management, decision-making, and automation.
- Workflow Automation: Build tools and automations that replace or streamline manual processes (e.g., deal pipeline, founder support, fundraising reporting, LP updates, HR onboarding).
- System Design: Make critical architecture decisions regarding infrastructure, APIs, data handling, security, scalability, and performance.
- Internal Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams (e.g., platform, investments, HR) to deeply understand user needs and translate them into usable, AI-enabled product features.
- Tool Evaluation and Integration: Evaluate, select, and integrate third-party tools (internal dev platforms, vector DBs, model APIs, orchestration layers) that best suit each use case.
- Rapid Prototyping & Iteration: Deliver MVPs quickly while continuously gathering feedback and improving product experience.
- Documentation & Maintenance: Build internal documentation and maintain technical excellence over the product’s lifecycle.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional experience in full-stack software development.
- Demonstrated experience shipping AI-enabled products or tools, particularly in LLMs or agentic workflows.
- Proficiency in modern web frameworks and languages (React, Next.js, Node.js, Python, TypeScript).
- Strong cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and DevOps best practices.
- Experience with vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant) and embedding models.
- Fluency in API design, systems thinking, and architectural decision-making.

Core Expertise
- AI/ML: Strong understanding of LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agent frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex), fine-tuning/customisation strategies, and AI evaluation.
- Full-Stack Engineering: Comfortable developing both backend (APIs, services, data) and frontend (dashboards, admin tools, interfaces).
- Product Mindset: Empathy for users and strong instincts for UX and internal tooling usability.
- Builder DNA: Self-starter who thrives in zero-to-one environments and enjoys figuring things out with limited specs.
- Security & Data Privacy: Knowledge of access control, secure authentication, and compliance best practices for internal tools.
- Knowledge Graphs and Agents: Solid understanding of knowledge graphs, agent-based systems, and structured search workflows, including how to leverage semantic relationships between entities to improve information retrieval, automate reasoning, and enhance decision-making tools in internal systems.
- Experience building cross-functional AI tools—not just prototypes, but delivered in production environments.
Bonus Points (Nice to Have):
- Experience building internal tools for operational teams (VC, finance, HR, legal, etc.).
- Exposure to data visualisation tools, business intelligence platforms, or no-code/low-code integrations.
- Experience working in an early-stage startup or as a founding engineer.
- Familiarity with African startup ecosystems or venture capital workflows.
- Proven ability to craft AI roadmaps and influence at executive levels.
